The Jan-Markt versions of the Toyota GR 86 and the Subaru BRZ with 232 hp were jointly announced this morning. While the latter is visually identical to the 228 hp US market car presented in November, it was the first time Jan saw his home market specification. Immediately after the reveal, the boys in blue laid out some accessories and STI performance parts for their version of the car.
The pictures show a more aggressive GT, which is equipped with aerodynamic improvements. A lower front spoiler pushes the lower bumper, while the side inlets add LED fog lights. The rocker arms move backwards adding a pair of small winglets just in front of the rear wheels.
From the rear we see a larger underbody spoiler and rally-style vortex generators along the rear edge of the roof. The trunk lid also sports a thin spoiler in black. However, these bulbs should be interchangeable with a larger touring car-style carbon fiber wing and gooseneck design.
A set of Y-spoke wheels can help set the BRZ art from its Toyota Twin, which has the same wheels in production. They’re even in bronze, perhaps a subtle reminder of the gold wheels Subaru’s rally cars were known for. A side ventilation set and a sports exhaust round off the range, the last grouping of which is decorated with the STI logo. Subaru’s racing division may have helped design it, but it’s more likely that it’s a version of the tS – or “Tuned by STI” – trim than an all-out STI variant.
It should be noted that these parts are described as being under development and are intended only for Jan, at least for now. A camouflaged 2022 GT equipped with some of these items was discovered while testing at Fuji Speedway in December.
The pieces make up for the toned down look of the new BRZ and add a bit of fun to the more mature face. Toyota is almost certain to offer a group of tuning parts for the 86 under its Gazoo Racing or TRD brands. If there really was a “friendly rivalry” against the development team of the 86, as Toyota says, it will be interesting to see how Toyota reacts.
