Ford brings western King Ranch treatment to the hot-selling Explorer for the first time. The Explorer King Ranch was created in response to popular requests and receives numerous high-quality accents inside and out.
As was typically the case, the external modifications are relatively subtle. King Ranch models get 20-inch wheels, a stone gray grating, four exhaust trims, and a dash of W-scale branding. What counts here is what’s inside. Ford added two-tone Del Rio leather upholstery, as well as Sele wood trim on the dashboard and steering wheel. W-shed marks pear on the backrests and on the central armrest.
Drivers who want to complement the old-school look with the latest technology can order the optional premium technology package. It offers several contour front seats with a massage function, a 10.1-inch touchscreen on the center stack and a Bang & Olufsen sound system with 14 speakers specially designed for the Explorer cabin.
The power for the King Ranch comes from a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 that develops 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. It turns the rear or the four wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission; Ford points out that the King Ranch is the only Explorer offered with the V6 and rear-wheel drive. The SUV can tow up to 5,600 pounds thanks to a standard trailer tow package, among other things, while the Co-Pilot360 technology suite offers numerous electronic driving aids.
Ford stores in the US will receive the Explorer King Ranch starting spring 2021, about 20 years after the first King Ranch model, the 2001 F-150, made its debut. Prices start at $ 52,350 for the rear-wheel drive model and $ 54,350 for the all-wheel drive version. With a view to the future, the King Ranch is complemented in the showrooms by a more off-road oriented Explorer, which could be called FX4 or Timberline.
