Skoda confirms Rid CNG is on the cards; 4 new launches this year

Skoda will shortly expand the Rid range in India with a new CNG variant. This information was recently confirmed by Zac Hollis, Skoda’s director of sales and marketing, while responding to a request from a Twitter user. Given the skyrocketing fuel prices in the country, this should be a welcome relief for many. The Skoda Rid CNG is currently in the test phase. Further details will be announced shortly before the launch.

With the Rid CNG, Skoda will only be the third carmaker in India to offer a CNG variant of a vehicle ex works. The other two manufacturers are Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. CNG cars are very useful for daily commuting within the city limits and are much easier on your pockets than your normal diesel cars. So adding a CNG variant to its volume-driven model like the Rid is a smart move for the company.

Under the hood, the Rid CNG is likely powered by the same 1.0-liter TSI three-cylinder turbo engine as the regular petrol variant. The petrol versions of the Rid have a maximum output of 108 hp and a peak torque of 175 Nm. As with most CNG conversions, the Rid-CNG will likely provide slightly reduced performance. Transmission options could include both the 6-speed manual transmission and the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. It also remains to be seen in which panels of the Skoda sedan the CNG drive train will be offered.

In one of his tweets, Zac Hollis also confirmed that the company will launch four new vehicles in India over the next 12 months, starting with the Skoda Kushaq. However, it is not confirmed whether or not the Rid CNG will be part of the four new launches. But it could definitely be a possibility. One of the other Skoda models to hit the market in India this year will be the model Next generation Octavia. Even the performance was focused Octavia RS could be an option for India.
