The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance will turn heads and capture an equal number of hearts when it arrives this fall. We are already impressed thanks to the driving dynamics of the new Lexus IS F SPORT, but this performance variant has the potential to make things even better. F SPORT Performance models offer new style elements, updated safety functions and an enormous drive train.

Styling & design

The bonnet of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance is almost two inches higher than that of the standard IS. The front and rear bumpers have also been extended to give the F SPORT Performance a more muscular posture. The 19-inch Enkei light-alloy wheels with split 10-spokes further reinforce this muscular posture. According to Lexus, the Enkei alloy wheels are a pound. Other exterior updates include the redesigned lower rear diffuser, the black F SPORT spoiler, the dark chrome window trim and the unique black emblem. Engine and powertrain specifications

Underneath that raised hood is a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 that develops 472 horsepower (7,100 rpm) and 395 lb-ft. Torque (4,800 rpm). The 5.0-liter system is quite a jump from the top engine in the Lexus IS 2021 range, a 3.5-liter V6 that develops 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft. of the torque. Despite the larger engine, the Lexus IS 500 F SPORT 2022 only has 143 lbs of power. heavier in terms of curb weight compared to the current IS 350 F SPORT with the V6. Lexus lists the weight of the IS 500 F SPORT Performance at 3,891 lbs.

According to Lexus, the time from zero to 60 on the IS 500 F Sport Performance is 4.5 seconds. Lexus also estimates fuel economy on the highway at 24 mpg.

The same eight-speed automatic transmission that can be found in the current IS 300 and IS 350 RWD is attached to the 5.0-liter engine. The Sport S and Sport S + modes improve performance by changing different vehicle systems (engine, transmission, steering assistant and damping force) accordingly. In the meantime, the custom mode offers different combinations for the powertrain (Normal, Eco and Power), the chassis (Normal or Sport) and the air conditioning (Normal or Eco).

The standard Dynamic Handling Package offers fun extras such as an Adtive Variable Suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential. The braking improvements for the IS 500 F SPORT Performance include additional aerodynamic cooling measures and larger two-part 14-inch aluminum front rotors and 12.7-inch tail rotors.

Standard security features

The IS 500 F SPORT Performance is standard with the Lexus security system + 2.5 Package. It includes a pre-collision system, a frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection. Further standard safety features are the dynamic all-wheel drive radar cruise control, the lane departure alarm with steering assistant, intelligent high beam and the traffic sign assistant.

Prices & availability

The 2022 Lexus IS 500 F SPORT Performance is expected at dealerships later this fall. Lexus says pricing information, outdoor and indoor color choices, and other optional features will be announced closer to this time.

It’s also worth noting that the upcoming IS 500 is the first in a new F SPORT Performance line. Even so, it will be exciting to see where Lexus will take this new performance-inspired theme over the next few years.
