Is “Project Trinity” the future of Volkswagen? A quick look at the electrified and autonomous sedan from VW



VW provided the first Project Trinity design preview. It’s not a big taster right now, just the silhouette photo above. However, if all goes according to plan, Project Trinity could set the tone for the automaker’s product lines and business models in the future. In terms of Project Trinity as a standalone unit, it will be an electric sedan with autonomous capabilities as high as Level 4. A newly developed electrical platform with state-of-the-art software is at the heart of the Trinity project, which is to be manufactured in Wolfsburg from 2026.

“Trinity is a kind of crystallization point for our ACCELERATE strategy, a lighthouse project, our software dream car,” explained Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. “The newly developed vehicle architecture will set standards in terms of range, charging speed and digitization.”

Level 4 ability

In terms of autonomous capability, Project Trinity will reach Level 2+ by the start of serial production in 2026 and will be technically ready for Level 4. “We use our economies of scale to make autonomous driving available to many people and to build a learning neural network,” Brandstätter continued. “In this way, we create the conditions for the continuous exchange of data from our vehicle fleet – for example on the traffic situation, obstacles or accidents.”

State-of-the-art manufacturing

With the production of Project Trinity, VW intends to turn the Wolfsburg plant into a beacon of progressive manufacturing. And this is where Project Trinity shows up as more than just another future concept car, despite a quick preview right now. With so many words, Project Trinity could represent a fundamental change in the way VW designs its cars.

For example, Project Trinity and other future VW vehicles will consist of fewer variants and contain standardized hardware. VW explains that this not only reduces the complexity of manufacturing for customers, it also gives customers the freedom to activate the desired functions via the vehicle’s digital ecosystem if necessary. “We will completely rethink the way we build cars and introduce revolutionary approaches,” said Brandstätter. “Digitization, automation and lightweight construction play an important role here.”

VW’s future goals

As of this writing, VW hasn’t announced an exact release date for Project Trinity, only that the electric sedan should go into production in 2026. However, VW stated that they are continuing to develop their automobiles software-based products Support of new, data-based business models. In this way, VW wants to remove the obstacles associated with individual mobility and at the same time make the vehicle features more attractive for buyers.

“In the future, the individual configuration of the vehicle will no longer be determined by the hardware at the time of purchase,” said Brandstätter. “Instead, customers can add functions to the car’s digital ecosystem at any time as needed.”
