It has been about five months since the second generation Mahindra Thar went on sale in India, and after two Price increases, Setting the base specification AX variants and even a major Manufacturing recallThe waiting time for the SUV remains at an all-time high. That said, if you book your Thar today, you can only expect it to be delivered to you by early 2022.
It is the diesel-manual variant with the hardtop roof and in the Noli Black paintwork, which has the longest waiting time of up to 11-12 months. Mahindra had previously shown that automatic variants of the Thar are much more popular than manual ones, with some automatic variants also having a waiting period of up to 10 months. The convertible top variants and petrol manual variants of the Thar now have a comparatively shorter waiting time.
Art of being in great demand that global shortage of semiconductor chips is a main reason why the Thar has so long waiting times. For this reason, fully built Thars sit at dealerships without their 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This leads to a stay with the deliveries until the displays arrive and are attached to the dealers.
The new generation Thar is offered in a total of 6 color options, 4 motor-gearbox configurations and two variants. Engine options for the Thar include a 2.0 liter mStallion TGDI petrol engine with 150 hp and 300 Nm torque (320 Nm with automatic transmission) and a 2.2 liter mHawk diesel with 130 hp and 300 Nm peak torque. Transmission options include either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic for both engines. All-wheel drive and a transfer case with a short range are standard in all variants.
The new Mahindra Thar is an extremely well packaged vehicle with all the amenities and features you would expect from a modern SUV. If you can live with two doors, the new Thar is also a great everyday car. The prices for the Thar are currently between 12.10 lakh and 14.15 lakh (from the showroom). Although the Thar does not currently have a direct rival, it will soon see competition from the BS6 Force Gurkha and bound to India Maruti Suzuki Jimny.
