Both the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan are fantastic opportunities to enter the luxury automotive sector. Mercedes-Benz launched the A-Class sedan in India just last week, giving the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe a much-needed rival. And suddenly we have an amazing rivalry here in the entry-level luxury sedan. Now the BMW 2GC and Mercedes A-Class have a lot in common – also in terms of size, powertrain and luxury quotient. But what are the differences? In terms of dimensions, both sedans are very similar to one another. However, it is the Mercedes that is longer and bigger. Meanwhile it is BMW 2 GC is slightly wider than the A-Class sedan. However, both sedans differ greatly in terms of the gasoline engine they use under their hood. While the Mercedes uses a smaller engine with a single turbocharger, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe uses a larger engine with two turbochargers. Of course, the BMW produces a lot more power and torque than the A-Class sedan. While both sedans received a 7-speed transmission, the 2 GC received a normal torque converter automatic, while the A-Class sedan received a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The same applies to the diesel versions of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé versus the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan. This time around, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is much more powerful and has more torque than the A-Class sedan, while both sedans use engines of similar capacity and specification. While the 2 GC continues with a 7-speed torque converter automatic transmission for the diesel variants, the A-Class sedan receives an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Both sedans are equally competitively priced. The Mercedes A-Class sedan is available in a single, fully loaded fairing for both the petrol and diesel versions. Both petrol and diesel versions of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé are now available in two versions – Sportline and M Sport. While the Bimmer has a lower entry price for both gasoline and diesel versions, it is also more expensive in the upper price segment. The Mercedes A-Class now sits comfortably in between. With such price differences, it ultimately comes down to personal preferences. If you are looking for a sporty entry-level sedan, the BMW 2 GC is just the thing for you. However, if comfort and luxury are your priority, the Mercedes A-Class Sedan does better.
