Volkswagen ID concept under the spotlight

The Volkswagen ID concept has been unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, with the vehicle representing the German car giant’s take on an alternatively fuelled future.

Dr Herbert Diess, the Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand, acknowledged that the concept “will begin to introduce an entire family of electric vehicles on the market” when it’s released in 2020.

All of them will be based on a new vehicle architecture which was specially and exclusively developed for all-electric vehicles. Not for combustion engine or plug-in hybrid vehicles,” Dr Diess added.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the Volkswagen ID concept is that it will be the first compact car created by the German manufacturer that will be based on its MEB Modular Electric Drive Kit.

This will see a 125kW/170PS electric motor featuring lithium-ion batteries delivering power on top of a 360-mile range on a single charge.

Ulrich Eichhorn, the Research Director at Volkswagen, pointed out: “The major work will be in the batteries. This will be at the far-end of lithium-ion technology, not just a development of what we’ve got already and we are already working on it in research and advanced engineering.

The design of the Volkswagen ID concept is also impressive. The vehicle’s exterior, for example, stands out for a front end that is fully blanked off and is designed with digital headlamps wrapped in LED daytime running lights.

Step inside the car’s cabin and you’ll also be presented with an aesthetically pleasing interior that features a hi-tech LED dashboard, a retractable steering wheel and a set of rear cameras in place of mirrors. “No buttons, no switches, no sticks, just screens”, Dr Diess underlined.

Of course, we still have four years until the Volkswagen ID concept is set to arrive on UK roads. However, motorists can already experience electric vehicles designed by the German manufacturer in the form of the Volkswagen e-up! and the Volkswagen e-Golf.
