Formula 1 is the most popular car racing event in the world. These are the Top 10 crashes that have been witnessed on the circuit.
Niki Lauda
At the 1976 German grand prix held in Nurburging, Austrian driver Niki lost control of his vehicle in the second lap which to his car spinning into the barricades on the right side then back across the circuit where it collided with another vehicle and it caught fire. He suffered serious burns.



Gilles Villeneuve
Gilles Villeneuve lost his life at the 1982 Belgian grand prix held at Zolder when the Ferrari he was driving got in to contact with Jochen Mass’ vehicle and he was sent flying. He was thrown out of the car as the car smashed. He suffered a broken neck and later died.

Gerhard Berger
Berger lost control of his Ferrari and went on to hit a wall at very high speed. The car slid down the road and burst into flames but he escaped with few bruises. This happened at the 1989 San Marino grand prix in Imola, Italy.

Ayrton Senna
It was at the 1994 San Marino grand prix that the Brazilian driver Senna lost his life when his Williams car went off track at hit a concrete wall at the Tamburello corner. The impact loosened the suspension of the right front tyre which then hit Senna in the head.

Roland Ratzenberger
Ratzenberger was an amateur driver who lost his life at the San Marino grand prix of 1994. He crashed into a wall whilst he was travelling at 314.9 km/hr due to a front wing failure. He broke his neck.

Rubens Barrichello
In what is dubbed the Black Weekend for formula 1, Barrichello had a serious crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand prix when his car went flying to hit a fence. This was the same weekend that killed Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna.

The Belgian pile-up
It was at the wet circuit of the 1998 Belgian grand prix first lap when McLaren’s Coulthard used too much throttle on his car leading to a pile up of 14 vehicles.

Michael Schumacher and Luciano Burti
At the 2001 German grand prix at Hockenheim, Luciano Burti hit Michael Schumacher from behind and his car was sent flying and fell on to Bernoldi’s vehicle. This was because Schumacher dropped speed because of a gear selection problem and Burti did not see the speed drop.

Nick Heidfield and Takuma Sato
This crash was at the 2002 Australian grand prix when Heidfield’s car hit Takuma Sato. No one was injured in the crash.

Felipe Massa
Massa crashed after he was hit in the face by a spring from another driver’s car travelling at about 100mph at the 2009 Hungarian grand prix and lost control of his vehicle.
