Mercedes AMG – a history lesson C63 Coupe

In late September will be released the new C63 Coupe.

I like very much the AMG Mercedes models.

And I’m not sure if it’s because of their aggressive look, the higher performance, better handling or stability than a regular Mercedes. But I was curios to find out what exactly makes the difference. And I could find, only starting with a history lesson. Some general culture is always welcome.

AMG was founded in 1967 as a racing engine forge by former Mercedes engineers, Hans Werner Auftrecht and Erhard Melcher, near Stuttgart. The initials “AMG” come from Auftrecht, Melcher and GroBaspach (Auftrecht’s birth town). In 2005, Daimler became the wholly owner of AMG. This was then renamed as Mercedes AMG. Also, in 1999 the racing engine development was divested and continues to exist under the name HWA (Auftrecht initials).

All AMG engines are hand built, using a “one man, one engine” concept. At the moment there are about 50 AMG engine builders, according to Mercedes Benz. And each of them stamps the engine they produce with an engraved plaque depicting their signature.

The AMG power plant has an all-new design of the bi-turbo system, which features larger turbochargers and a new, more powerful charge-air cooling system and the increase in the engine displacement. This allows it to produce a claimed 621 horsepower and 738 pound feet of torque. No wonder why they are provider for Pagani and Aston Martin.

The AMG C63 has an aggressive appearance with a sleeker, sporty body. On the interior it combines elegant cues with high-quality materials, such as wood, leather and metallic inserts.

The C63 comes with a V8, twin-turbo engine with a 469 horses and 479 pound-feet of twist. One of my favorite is the AMG Speedshift, seven-speed automatic transmission, which features four modes: “comfort”, “individual”, “sport+”, and “race”. Of course, the “individual” mode lets you personalize how C63 behaves on the road.

Needless to say they are more expensive, but in this case the high-quality and high-performance speak for the price.

Next time when you see a 2 numbers badge Mercedes, instead of 3 as a regular one, be aware! You might fall in love! Or… you could just feel more safe on a Formula 1 Race, seeing the safety car. Because, only a C63 Coupe could be the one!
