Having the freedom and convenience of owning a car is something many of us appreciate.  Be it for the daily commute to work, dropping the kids off at school, or simply driving somewhere for the pleasure of it; our car can be a real pleasure.

However, there are times when it can be a frustration. Driving through heavily congested roads in well-populated towns and cities can be a headache for anybody trying to reach their chosen destination. The rising cost of fuel is also a problem, as are the outrageous parking rates, neither of which are good for our tightening wallets.

It may be hard to admit, but sometimes it may be better to leave the car at home and consider other forms of travel. So if driving is proving problematic for you at the moment, there are alternatives. Here are just a few of them.

Use public transport

You may not be ready to give up the peaceful tranquility from the comfort of your car, in favor of sitting alongside other people on your journey, but there are advantages in using public transport.

One less car on the road is always a good idea when thinking about the rising effects of global warming. Trains and buses are a safe and effective way of transporting a lot of people at the same time. They also use less carbon dioxide emissions, so by using their services, we are doing our bit for the environment.

Of course, public transport doesn’t have the flexibility a car does, so you will need to plan your route in advance. Missing a bus or train may mean arriving late at work, so source a timetable to find backup options.

Two wheels instead of four

Motorists often complain about cyclists, but instead of grumbling, why not become one of them and see what life is like for them on the other side of the wing mirror.

Weaving in and out of densely congested traffic is a zippier and healthier way to go, especially if traveling short distances. Not only will you save money on fuel costs, but you will also benefit your health. Using a bike for work or pleasure will increase your energy levels, lower cholesterol and improve your mood.  A little fresh air is good for you!

For longer distances, a motorcycle or electric scooter may be the right vehicle for you. With smaller engine sizes, they use significantly less fuel and are also cheaper to insure. Due to their small and lightweight size, they are considerably easier to park, too.

Use your feet

Having a car is great, but the convenience of having one can make us lazy. Many of drive our cars over short distances, yet walking may be a quicker alternative considering the amount of traffic we need to navigate through.

You won’t have to find a parking space, there will be no fuel costs involved, and it’s better for your health.  Walking will also give you time to take in the scenery, so rather than rushing everywhere, why not take your time.
