The Mazda MX5 is celebrating a big birthday in 2014 – 25 years since launch!
Believe it or not, it was a quarter of a century ago that the very first model was unveiled. The Mazda MX5 MK1 was showcased in 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, with a design that drew inspiration from sporty models in the 1960s; the similarities with the Triumph Spitfire were unmistakeable.
Today, the MX5 remains as popular as ever – fun, stylish, solidly built, affordable and reliable. With the fourth update of the model set to be released towards the end of 2014 – the MK4 is made from lightweight materials, smaller mechanical components and has a six-speed manual gearbox – what better time to look at the Mazda’s transition over the last 25 years? The graphic below, produced by T W White & Sons, takes a look at the journey of the Mazda through the ages.
